Academy Structure

The academy programme must be sustainable and allow a pathway of development for players throughout the region. The template for sustainability is based upon the following factors which should be in existence before an area an area is selected for Academy status.

Recognised 16-19 educational establishment –

The school or college will have

  • High quality facilities
  • Curriculum Volleyball
  • Commitment to volleyball
  • Volleyball literate Teachers and coaches

Gifted and Talented Programmes

Programmes of talent identification for each year group

National League Club

The club must

  • Participate in local and regional leagues.
  • Well administered
  • Have an effective junior development policy
  • Volley 1 Accredited

Community Volleyball Coach

The area must be served by a fulltime community volleyball coach. It is vital that a highly qualified coach can oversee the CPD needs of teachers and academy coaches.

Sports Partnership

The HUB school/college will need to be within an established school partnership. The local sports college will have a proactive programme that supports the development of volleyball. Alongside this programme is the involvement of SSCO’s and the CSC’s

University

The area must be supported by a proactive university with

A ell established club, ideally within the framework of the local NVL club

A Sports Science faculty that will support the both the

  • Volleyball programme
  • delivery of the NVQ

The Tendring Academy has in place all of the above components:

Recognised 16-19 educational establishment

Tendring Technology College has been delivering a high quality volleyball programme for since 1991. The college has won several national titles and played in over 10 national finals. The number of players from Tendring that currently play in the English NVL is significant and many have represented there country at both Junior and Cadet level. Alex Porter/Wayne Davies are currently in the senior national squads.

The college has volleyball embedded within the curriculum. Each year INSET for new and current staff is included in the staff CPD programme ensuring sustainability.

The college has also been a platform for the development of senior coaches. The coaches below have progressed from novice to level 3 qualified coaches, Darren Lewis, Liam Chinnery and Neil Masters all of whom are now having a significant impact of the national game. Coaches for the future are Emily Mansfield and Nick Davies

Gifted and Talented Programmes

Volleyball workshops for all age groups across the whole Tendring peninsula. Each year group has a day working with top coaches. Very productive tool for creating high performance teams.

National League Club

Tendring Volleyball Club is now a well administered club running teams in the local, regional and national league. The Volley 1 accredited club is the Eastern Region’s premier club when it comes to junior development and runs sessions for U11’s to Recreational adult session. This year saw the addition of a Senior Women’s team enter the NVL. The club has created an excellent marketing platform (see Attached) and will shortly apply for Volley 2 accreditation

Community Volleyball Coach

The college in partnership with the Colne Sports Partnership and the EVA part fund a fill-time community volleyball coach. The impact on both primary and secondary school volleyball is significant and is now starting to gain momentum. Over 10 primary schools now offer volleyball as part of their KS1 &2 PE curriculums. 2additional secondary schools have adopted curriculum volleyball and also have the sport as part of their extra-curricular programme

Sports Partnership

The Colne Sports Partnership has been very proactive in promoting the development of the sport in the locality

SSCO Programme

The college has an SSCO who works for 3 days per week solely in primary schools ensuring CPD for primary teachers. We also have a fulltime PE Teacher, previously a community volleyball coach that works in primary schools delivering Physical Education during teachers Planning, Preparation and Assessment time.

University

Partnership

The links with Essex University and their Human Performance Unit are an essential component in the delivery of an effective academy programme.

A university academy programme has now been created with students accessing coaching between 8.00-9.30am. This is aimed at elite athletes some of which may not have a volleyball background but all will have a physical profile that allows players to participate at the highest standard.

The Human Performance Unit assist in the delivery of the NVQ for the Regional Academy

The university has an annual scheme which identifies talented youngsters across the Eastern Region. The athletes who fit the physical profile will be selected for a volleyball induction programme with aim of introducing them to a junior academy. These are currently based in strategically placed areas Tendring/ Manningtree – current, Colchester – Jan 2009
