Main Activity
Group Introduction
With group seated
- Ask children what experience they have had with volleyball before OB1
- Ask if they know the names of any techniques OB1
- Demonstrate the volley, dig, serve, tip and smash OB2
- Tell them today we are going to learn to serve and how to play 2v2 OB2
- Explain rules, no kicking balls and no touching the net OB2
- Explain the word feed means throw OB2
The Serve OB2
Ask the children what they know about the serve, why we do it, how we do it, do we serve in any other sports? OB2
The serve looks similar to a tennis serve but the player stays up straight and there is no spin on the ball.
Key Points
- Contact point is the palm of the hand
- Impact point is above head height, in front of hitting shoulder
- Elbows is almost straight on contact
- Elbow and hand go behind head on back swing
- Firm wrist
- Relaxed fingers
- Hit the ball up in the air rather than flat
Rules Regarding Serving
- The ball has to go OVER the net.
- The ball is allowed to hit the net.
- You only get one attempt.
- In beginners volleyball you must be on or behind the badminton short service line. (normal volleyball you must be hind the base line)
- You change server each point. (this will change as the rules progress)
- If you win the point your team serves next.
Exercise 1) Tap The Ball OB3
In pairs with 1 ball, both seated with legs out stretched, feet almost touching.
Use a child to demonstrate.
Hold the ball with both hands under the ball, feed the ball above and slightly in front of your head and TAP the ball to your partner (use expression "HI FIVE the ball"), it helps to have a firm wrist. Make the ball go up and down instead of into your partner's face. Your partner catches the ball and then servers back to you.
10-15 time each.
Pointers
- Use the word TAP not HIT otherwise balls will be hit hard into peoples faces.
- Hands under the ball when feeding.
- Use BOTH hands when feeding.
- Hold the ball up against your palm and show the class what it looks like when the ball is on the fingers, palm and heal.
- To help them hit the ball up and down, you can put your arm out for the children to tap the ball over.
- Firm wrist.
Common Mistakes
- Ball is not thrown high enough, so it looks like a shot put.
- Ball is pushed instead of tapped.
- Ball is thrown directly above their head.
- Ball is thrown with incorrect hand positioning
Key Phases
- TAP the ball to your partner
- High Five the ball
Exercise 2) Stand Up Tap OB3
This is for RH people, LH people should have their feet the other way around.
In pairs with 1 ball, both standing on the same side of the net, almost touching distance apart (2-3m max).
Put your left foot in front and have all your weight on your back foot.
The top half of your body is exactly the same as before
Feed the ball up to a similar position as last time and TAP the ball to your partner,
10-15 times each.
Pointers / Common Mistakes
- Look for correct feet positioning and weight positioning
- Players should face slightly to the right(for RH) of their target NOT directly towards them
Exercise 3) Over the Net OB3
Stop the class and ask them to stand either side of the net, 2m from the net. If you have badminton court markings use the short service line.
Now they have to serve the ball over the net using the same technique.
After 30 seconds, tell them to move 1 step back if they can serve it to their partner 3 times in a row.
Pointers / Common Mistakes
- Ball is not feed high enough so they cant hit the ball upwards to go over the net
- Ball is feed directly in front of their head or non hitting shoulder, so ball goes to the left(for RH). It must be in front of hitting shoulder.
- Players collapse on one side - they must stay up straight.
- Remind players its about control not power - we will get on to power in future weeks.
GAMES OB4
2v2 Catch Throw
If you have a big sports centre ie 4 badminton courts, you can use the available floor markings. With a large class (32), use half a badminton court, for smaller class sizes you may even be able to play using full badminton courts. To play in a small sport hall, you will need to adjust the court size or play winner stays on (which will be crazy in the first week but better in the second.)
Catch Throw is to help children understand where they are suppose to stand, move to and where to play the ball to. Sit children down to the side of one court, in their pairs with one in front of the other.
To begin with explain the rules and object of the game
- Catch Throw is called Catch Throw because you catch it then you throw it, clever :-) .
- To score a point you must put the ball on your opponents floor or force them to make a mistake ie drop the ball or they hit it over and it lands outside of the court.
- Just like badminton each point starts with a serve and who ever wins the point serves next.
- You must pass the ball before sending it over the net.
- The point is over when the ball hits the floor
You now need to demonstrate and talk through how the game works. Choose 3 people to help out. Players are A&B and X&Y(you).
Way it works - When the ball comes over the net, you have to catch the ball. Your partner then moves in front of you, you throw the ball up for them to hit over . When the other team has the ball you have to stop them hitting the floor.
Ask A&B to stand next to each other near the middle of the court, your team does the same.
Let A or B serve. Tell the class you or X are going to catch it, if you catch it tell X to move in front of you a bit. Tell the other team they have to catch the ball when it comes over. Tell X they can use 1 or 2 hands to hit the ball over the net (most will use 1 as they have just been serving), now gently under arm throw the ball to X and they will knock it over. Normally A&B wont catch it, so you can ask the class "who won the point?", "Yes we did because....", " Yes thats correct, we hit the ball on the floor", " Who serves next?", "Yes we do, ok, my turn to serve". Remind A&B they have to catch the ball, then serve it over. When they catch the ball tell them to hold it then ask the other player to move forward. Ask the player to pass the ball to the other player who is going to hit it over. Remind X they have to catch it.
When you demonstrate the above it will all become clear.
Remind them they are playing half a badminton court. As they are in their pairs, you can now easily assign two teams to a court.
Ask them to role any spare balls over to you.
Rotate Teams OB4
Let them play for 3 or 4 minutes, after which ask them to stop and sit down where they are. Remind them the ball can touch the net but you cant and ask them to try and pass the ball underhand (demo while saying it). Ask them to rotate around one court position to their left, so they play against someone else, the teams on the end go under the net.
Let them play again for 3 or 4 minutes and again ask them to stop and site down. During the match time you will have been asked a few questions. You can address these now and ask "what happens if someone catches the ball when they are standing outside of the court?" Nothing, you have to carry on because the point only over when the ball hits the floor. Rotate the teams around again.
Play as many games as you can within the time limit left. When you are walking around ask questions about the game and point out if anyone has the wrong foot in front when serving.
One thing to note is that teams will create new rules among themselves. This is fine, you may find you have 10 different games going on but as they play more teams and as you introduce more rules the games will become standardised.
Extra Drills
Depending on the length of your lesson and how well behaved they are you may be able to do a few more exercises.
Exercise 3) Left, Left, Right OB3
After the children have practiced for a few minutes ask them to go back to the badminton service line.
Now with your left foot in front(RH), hold the ball in your left hand and hold your right hand above and behind your head (when you do this say itchy head). Try and feed the ball up to a similar position as before and TAP the ball to your partner. Children will remember it if you say Left, Left, Itchy Head.
Pointers
• They can practice the feed a few times before TAPPING the ball,
• The impact point should be above and slightly in front of the hitting shoulder,
• If they forget to put their right hand up, ask them if they still have nits, they will normally remember to itch their heads.
• Watch the feet, make sure they are the correct way around,
• If they struggle with the feed, they can go back to 2 hands
• Best to keep body and chest up straight
• 9/10 the ball goes the way you face.
