Main Activity
Group Introduction
With group seated
• Remind class of the rules, no kicking balls or touching the net
• Ask them how they serve, volley and play catch throw
Warm Up OB1
Tournament OB2
Ask children to get themselves into pairs(or use the same pairs from warm up)
If enough space, mark out enough courts so every team can play at the same time other wise play king of the court
With Enough Space
To run a tournament, you can either play 5 minutes per game or the first to say 10 points. In a lesson environment it’s easier to play by time than points. After school tournaments can be played by points.
Explain the rules again, 2v2, the ball should be played over the net with a volley, tip or hit, the 1st and 2nd touches should be caught and thrown, the ball can touch the net but players cant, if the ball landed on the line its in.
Organise it so each team has an opponent.
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
v v v v v v v v
9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16
If you have an odd number of teams, you can ask the team sitting off to referee two games.
After 5 mins of play stop the matches and tell them they got 3 points for a win, 2 for a draw and 1 for a lose. If they cant decide who won then its a draw. Ask them to keep a tally of their own score.
Team 1 stays where they are everyone else rotates around one court position, so 1 will play 10, 9 will play 11, etc.
1 9 2 3 4 5 6 7
v v v v v v v v
10 11 12 13 14 15 16 8
You can then rotate the children around as many times as you have time for. Realistically they can have 8ish games in an hour because of the time taken to collect results and move them around.
At the end of the lesson the team with the most points wins. Watch out for teams that won more points than possible ie 15 points but only played 4 games.
Without Enough Space - King of The Court
Some children will know it as “winner stays on” or “kings and queens”
Divide the number of teams by the number of courts (roughly), it doesn’t matter if there are different numbers on different courts. Simply go around and name each team A,B,C, A,B,C, depending on the number of courts and send all teams A to court A, all B’s to court B, etc.
The game consists of one point each time, the winners goes to (or stays on) the king’s side of the court, the losers are replaced with a different team. The teams sitting off take it in turns to replace the losing team. It may be beneficial to have a bench along the wall for them to sit on, so they don’t interfere with other games.
· Nominate one side of the court as the Kings
· The challenging team always servers
· Servers can choose where to serve from ie middle or back of court BUT serving from very close to the net is not allowed.
· If the teams start to argue about who won, ask them how they think that can stop it in the future? The correct answer is to ask the people sitting out to watch the game and referee. This will help with standardising the rules.
It will be very difficult to count the number of wins each team gets, so when they are familiar with how king of the court works ask them to count how many times they win a game when they are kings. Winning to become king doesn’t count.
After 10 mins of play you need to rearrange the teams so they are more competitive. To do this ask which team won the most points on each court, you can then either move the teams who won the most up one court and the teams with the least wins down one court or you can put all the winners on one court, all the 2nd placed on another, 3rd on another, etc. Your choice will depend on the number of courts you have.
Every 10 mins you can move the teams around to create move equal courts.
If you notice that one team is totally out of place, it may be wise to swap them before the games go on to long as they will get disheartened very quickly if they cant play.
If a team is very poor at serving you can tell them they can use an under arm throw to start each point or to stand closer, this will very rarely.
If playing indoors, you can add the rule that if the ball hits the roof the team who threw the ball loses the point instantly.
