Main Activity

Group Introduction

With group seated

 •    Remind class of the rules, no kicking balls or touching the net

 •    Ask them how they serve, volley and play catch throw

Warm Up OB1
Practice volleying skills
In pairs with 1 ball, 10 volleys each and then change, working away from the net
Now count how many times you can volley to each other
Practice serving skills
In pairs with 1 ball, 10 serves each, working over the net

Learn To Tip/Hit

What is a tip and what does it look like?

A tip is when the ball is played over the net with one hand. The arm should be straight and the ball should be played with the fingers not the palm. It is normally a soft shot that only goes over the net a short distance. The ball is not caught and thrown or hit, it’s a push.

Demonstration

Throw the ball up to yourself and with a straight arm push the ball using your wrist to a pupil. Do it again but ask then this time to watch you arm and hand not the ball.

Exercise 1) Basic Tipping OB2

In pairs with 1 ball, standing 2-3m apart. 1 person at the net the other away from the net.

1 person feeds the ball nice and high, the other person then has to put their dominate hand up straight and then push the ball back to their partner.

10 and then change

Pointers

·         Straight arm

·         Use fingers to push ball

·         Use wrist to add energy to the ball.

10 times each and then switch

Exercise 2) Tip To Space OB2

Once they have started to master the basic concept get them to tip the ball to the side of their partner instead of straight to them.

10 times each and then switch

Exercise 3) Tip Over The Net OB2

This will be a lot easier with an assistant or a small class, as only 1 or 2 people will be working at any time.

Those without a ball go the other side of the net, those with a ball line up with their balls on your side of the net.

Stand next to the net, on the right hand side of the 1st person, so they are to your left.

They will give the ball to you and start moving to the net, you will under arm feed the ball 1-2m above the net, they will come forward and tip the ball over the net. They will naturally add a jump, which is what we want.

The tippers partner will go get the ball and join the back of the que, the tipper then becomes the catcher. The next person comes forward and does the same. If you have two ques working, each person will only be waiting for 10-15 seconds. If you don’t have an assistant you can use a child to feed balls. If doing this, make sure they are in front of you so you can offer them advice on how high to throw the ball.

10 Tips Each.

Exercise 4) Hitting OB2

Ask the children now to imagine they are watching a tennis match and someone is about to do an over arm serve. If you demonstrate this it will clarify what you mean.

Now using the same drill as before ask them to try and hit the ball over the net using a tennis serve action. Tell them they need to hit the ball on the palm of your hand.

Games OB3

Set up a 2v2 Catch Throw competition with the 3rd touch having to be a volley, tip or hit over the net.

After 5 mins is up, change the teams around but take the weaker teams to one side.
