Main Activity

Group Introduction

With group seated

 •    Remind class of the rules, no kicking balls or touching the net

 •    Ask them how they serve, volley and play catch throw

Warm Up OB1
Practice volleying skills
In pairs with 1 ball, 10 volleys each and then change, working away from the net
Now count how many times you can volley to each other
Practice serving skills
In pairs with 1 ball, 10 serves each, working over the net

The Volley At Angles OB2

Key points

 •    The ball goes the direction the body faces.

 •    One foot points to where the ball comes from, the other points to where you want the ball to go to.

 •    Hand action is the same as a straight volley.

 •    Turn body as ball is being played

 •    Finish the way you want the ball to go

Exercise 1) Turn and Play

In 3's with 1 ball, 1 feeder, 1 volleyer, 1 catcher,

In a triangle standing 2-3m from each other. One person feeds the ball to the volleyer who volleys the ball to the catcher, This continues around in a circle, so each person carries out each roll. Demo this in slow motion, catch the ball, turn and throw the ball after your facing the target.

10 volleys each then change direction

Key Points

 •    Foot positioning

 •    Turning at same time as ball

 •    Body faces target

Key Phases

Turn as you volley

Exercise 2) Keepy Uppy

In 3's with 1 ball

In a triangle standing 2-3m from each other. Volley the ball to each other trying to keep the ball up for as long as possible, the ball can go in either direction. A target of 10 volleys without an error is realistic.

Key Pointers

 •    Watch for people catching and throwing instead of volleying

 •    Volley up not flat to give team mates a chance.

Key Phases

The higher the volley the easier it is for your partners

Exercise 3) 2v2 Catch Throw OB3

Mark out enough courts for 2v2.

Demonstrate how to play catch throw again as some children will need reminding. Remember to use "Catch, Catch, Throw"

After 5 mins of play introduce some new rules and new opponents.

 •    Players can only hold onto the ball for 3 seconds

 •    Who ever wins the point servers next

Ask if there are any questions.

Then ask one team in a corner to stay where they are, ask every team to rotate around one court position to their left.

Every 5 minutes or so, rotate the teams around, remember to leave the same team where they are or teams will play the same teams.
