Main Activity

Group Introduction

With group seated

 •    Remind class of the rules, no kicking balls or touching the net

 •    Ask them how they serve and volley

 •    Tell them today they are going to learn how to play 2v2 Catch Throw

Warm Up OB1

Practice volleying skills

In pairs with 1 ball, 10 volleys each and then change, working away from the net

Now count how many times you can volley to each other

Practice serving skills

In pairs with 1 ball, 10 serves each, working over the net

2v2 Catch Throw Stage 1 OB2

Mark out enough courts for 2v2. Max size is 3-4m wide by 5-6m long. Catch Throw is to help children understand where they are suppose to stand, move to and where to play the ball to. Sit children down to side of one court. Choose 3 people to help out. Players are A&B and X&Y.

Players start by standing in their half of their side of the court. One team choose to serve(X&Y). Player A catches the ball, player B then goes to the net and faces their partner. Player A throws the ball to B who catches it. Player A now goes to the net, Player B then passes the ball to Player A who catches the ball and then throws it over the net. A and B then move back to their start positions. Say Player X caught the ball, then the same happens on their team Player Y moves to the net and the ball is passed to them and so on.

After slowly demonstrating a couple of points they will understand how it works. Use the phrase "Catch, Catch, Throw" to help them understand how many touches are involved.

To win a point one of the following happens

1.      You put the ball on your opponents floor

2.      You opponent fails to get the ball back over the net ie they drop it or it comes off them before it hits the ground

3.      You opponents throw the ball outside of your court without your team touching it.

Get them to get into pairs and sit next to each other. Play similar agility levels against each other.

There are very few rules to begin with as you dont want to overload them with to much information. They will make up some rules themselves to keep the game going, this is fine. Some children will find the concept of if they touch the ball before it goes out and if they catch it when they are standing outside of the court a problem but this is fine as their understanding will develop over the next few weeks along with the rules.

Catch Throw Stage 2 OB2

After 5 mins of play introduce some new rules and new opponents.

·         The ball can touch the net but players cant

·         If the ball lands on the line its in

·         You cant move when your holding the ball but you can turn on the spot

·         All passes MUST be an underarm feed - appart from the 3rd touch.

Ask if there are any questions.

Then ask one team in a corner to stay where they are, ask every team to rotate around one court position to their left. They should now all be playing different teams. Its important that they rotate after only 5 mins of play because it helps standardise what everyone is doing.

Catch Throw Stage 3 OB3

After another 5 mins the players will understand the game fully. We now introduce the the ‘let’ and the volley to the game.

The Let

The let can be introduced at any time, especially when teams start to argue. Stop the class ask them how they can solve the problem of teams arguing. Sometimes they will say about replaying the point but most of the time they don’t have an answer. You answer is to play a ‘let’, hold both your hands out in front of you with each hand in a thumbs up position. A let means the point is cancelled and must be replayed. Some children will call this ‘thumbs’, which is fine as long as they do the hand position everyone knows what they mean.

The easiest route is to volley the 3rd touch over the net. For this to work the 2nd touch must be an under arm feed thats high enough. It is best to demonstrate a good underarm and bad underarm fee.

Every 5 minutes or so, rotate the teams around, remember to leave the same team where they are or teams will play the same teams.
