Lesson Notes

No warm up is needed as the session starts slow and builds up as time goes on.

Main Activity

Group Introduction

With group seated

 •    Remind class of the rules, no kicking balls or touching the net

 •    Ask them what they remember regarding the volley ie drinking coke, where do they want the ball to go(up) etc

Same exercises as last lesson

Basic Volley OB1

1 Ball between 2, 1 feeder, 1 worker. 10 Volleys each and then change.

Volley To Each Other OB1

1 Ball between 2, try to volley the ball to each other as many times as possible

The Serve OB2

Ask the children what they know about the serve, why we do it, how we do it, do we serve in any other sports? OB2

The serve looks similar to a tennis serve but the player stays up straight

Key Points

•    Contact point is the palm of the hand

•    Impact point is above head height, in front of hitting shoulder

•    Elbows is almost straight

•    Firm wrist

•    Relaxed fingers

•    Hit the ball up in the air rather than flat

Exercise 1) Tap The Ball OB3

In pairs with 1 ball,  both seated with legs out stretched, feet almost touching.

Use a child to demonstrate.

Hold the ball with both hands under the ball, feed the ball above and slightly in front of your head and TAP the ball to your partner. Making the ball go up and then down instead of into your partners face.  your partner catches the ball  and then servers back to you.

10-15 time each.

Pointers

•    Use the word TAP not HIT otherwise balls will be hit hard into peoples faces,

•    Hands under the ball when feeding,

•    Use BOTH hands when feeding

•    Hold the ball up against your palm and show the class what it looks like when the ball is on the fingers, palm and heal,

•   To help them hit the ball up and down, you can put your arm out for the children to tap the ball over.

Key Phases

TAP the ball to your partner

High Five the ball

Exercise 2) Left, Right OB3

This is for RH people, LH people should do it the other way around.

In pairs with 1 ball, both standing

Standing almost touching distance apart (2-3m max), left foot in front,

Feed the ball up to a similar position as last time and TAP the ball to your partner, trying to make the ball go up a little,

10-15 times each.

Exercise 3) Left, Left, Right OB3

After the children have practiced for a few minutes ask them to take a step back so they are 3-4m apart.

Now with your left foot in front, hold the ball in your left hand and hold your right hand above and behind your head  (when you do this say itchy head). Try and feed the ball up to a similar position as before and TAP the ball to your partner.  Children will remember it if you say Left, Left, Itchy Head.

Pointers

•    They can practice the feed a few times before TAPPING the ball,

•    The impact point should be above and slightly in front of the hitting shoulder,

•    If they forget to put their right hand up, ask them if they still have nits, they will normally remember to itch their heads.

•    Watch the feet, make sure they are the correct way around,

•    If they struggle with the feed, they can go back to 2 hands

•   Best to keep body and chest up straight

•   9/10 the ball goes the way you face.

Key Phases

TAP the ball

Left, Left, Itchy Head

Exercise 4) Over The Net OB3

In pairs with 1 ball, 1 standing either side of the net.

Same as last exercise but this time over the net.  Start from 1metre away from the net, if your partner can catch your serve 3 times in a row move back 1 step, if you miss 3 times in a row take a step forward.

5 minutes

Pointers

•    When you try and hit the ball hard, you normally lean over, this makes if very difficult, try staying up straight,

•    The ball needs to go up and over the net, to do this remind the children to High Five the ball,

•    Watch out for people hitting it as hard as possible as they will have no control,

Key Phases

Stay up straight

While they are practicing their serving you can put some spots down to create some courts, approx 1-2m wide and 4-5m deep. It doesn't have to be exact, just so they are aware they have boundaries .

GAMES OB4

Same as last week 1v1, but this time each point starts with a serve (by the previous points winners, although this isn't important)

Remind the class they aren't allowed to to touch the net but the ball can. Also that you have put some spots down to mark out a court for each game.

Ask the class how you score a point, and ask them what happens if the ball hits the line? Is it in or out? Its in.

Pointers

•   Introduce when the ball is low in front of them they can catch it and throw it up in the air so they can volley it.

•   Try to get the stronger people to play against each other

•   Weaker people can 'slow volley' the ball - a fast catch-throw

Play for 5 minutes and then change opponents

The children will make up their own rules so there will probably be 10 different games going on, this is absolutely fine as they will learn the rules over the next few weeks.

Extra Drills

Depending on the length of your lesson and how well behaved they are you may be able to do a few more exercises.

Exercise 5) Serve and Volley

In pairs standing 1m, this can be done over or away from the net. Standing 2-3m apart, 1 player serves the ball TO the other player who has to volley the ball up in the air and then catch it.

10 times each

Pointers

•    The serve has to go high enough for the other player to volley it

•    If easy, the volleyer can try and make it go back to the server.

Key Phases

Serve it high enough so you partner can get to it

9/10 times the ball goes the way your facing

Exercise 6) Serve, Volley, Touch the Floor, Catch

In pairs standing 1m, this can be done over or away from the net. Standing 2-3m apart, 1 player serves the ball TO the other player who has to volley the ball up in the air, touch the floor and then catch it.

Pointers

•    Stronger players can try and volley it a second time instead of catching it

•    The first volley has to be high to give time to touch the floor

10 times each and change
