Lesson Notes

No warm up is needed as the session starts slow and builds up as time goes on.

Main Activity

Group Introduction

With group seated

 •    Ask children what experience they have had with volleyball before OB1

 •    Ask if they know the names of any techniques OB1

 •    Demonstrate the volley, dig, serve, tip and smash OB2

 •    Tell them today we are going to learn the volley and how to play 1v1 OB2

 •    Explain rules, no kicking balls and not touching the net OB2

The Volley OB3

Explain hand positioning

Its like drinking a 3 litre bottle of diet coke while doing the funky chicken dance.

Key Points

•    Hands slightly in front and above forehead,

•    Head tilted back,

•    Elbows out to the side,

•    Fingers are relaxed,

•    Space between hands.

•    Hands stay above head at all times

Exercise 1) Drinking Coke

In pairs with 1 ball, 1 seated, 1 standing

Use a child to demonstrate.

Seated person puts hands in roughly correct position, standing person places ball into hands, the ball should stay in the same place if hands are in correct position. Seated person then pushes ball as high as they can.

Pointers

•    If ball is thrown to seated person, they throw the ball from the wrong place.

•    Ball needs to be pushed straight up, not in front

•    Seated person has to look at the ball the whole time,

•    Its a push up, not a football throw in.

10 times each and then change over. See who can make the ball go the highest.

Key Phases

Its like drinking a 3l bottle of diet coke

Launch the ball into the sky

Exercise 2) As High As The Sky

The same as before but this time the standing person does a small underarm feed into the seated persons hands.

Need to demonstrate what a feed is and how high the ball goes when fed.

Pointers

 •    ALWAYS underarm feed,

•    Show difference between underarm feed, chest pass and over arm feed,

•    The feed should go up and then down, not straight at the person head,

•    Demonstrate the flight of the ball by moving it in your hand.

 10 each and then change

Key Phases

Underarm feed that goes up then down

Exercise 3) Basic Volley

Both people now stand, almost the same as before but they stand a bit further apart - 2m (standing touching distance apart). Try and volley the ball as high as possible.

Pointers

 •    The feed is very important, dont stand too far apart or too close.

•    The feed has to be high enough

•    The volleyer has to have their hand up ready before the ball is fed otherwise the feeder will throw the ball to low

•    Demonstrate the flight of the ball by moving it in your hand.

10 each and then change

Key Phases

Stand far enough apart that you can almost touch each other with your arms out stretched.

GAMES OB4

Explain the aim of the game,

•    to score a point you must

◦    Put the ball on your opponents floor, in front or behind them

◦    You opponent fails to return the ball back over the net

◦    You opponent hits the ball out of court

•    As many touches as you want

•    Players are allowed to catch the ball and then volley it back over or even volley it straight back over without a catch.

Pointers

•    Each point is started by throwing the ball OVER the net TO your partner

•    If you are not starting a point, you roll the ball UNDER the net

•    The size of the court is 1-2m wide and as 4-5m long, this doesn’t need to be exact and you don’t have to tell them this as they will decide how big of a space to play in.

•    Tell the kids that the ball has to be in a straight line and not over to the side.

•    Demonstrate the game with a child

Play for 5 minutes and then change opponents

The children will make up their own rules so there will probably be 10 different games going on, this is absolutely fine as they will learn the rules over the next few weeks.

Extra Drills

Depending on the length of your lesson and how well behaved they are you may be able to do a few more exercises.

Exercise 4) Volley To Each Other

In pairs standing 1m apart, try to volley the ball to each other for as long as you can

Pointers

•    Demonstrate the flight of the ball,

•    Ball should go 1m up in air,

•    Try to be with someone of a similar height,

•    Give them a target of say 10 or 20 depend on year group,

•    If its easy stand 2m apart.

Key Phases

Gently volley the ball to your partner

Count how may you can do, if you can do 20 without the ball hitting the floor tell me – you can then give them a target of 30.

Exercise 5) Little Volley Big Volley

In pairs standing 2m apart, 1 feeder, 1 worker.10 each and then change.

Feeder gives a nice high feed to the worker who then does one small volley to themselves(50cm above them) and then volleys the ball back to their partner.

Pointers

•    Demonstrate the height of the first volley,

•    The first volley much go straight up and slightly in front of the vollyer,

•    They may have to move their feet.

Key Phases

Small volley, big volley,

Move your feet if you have to.

Exercise 6) Volley Clap Volley

In pairs standing 2m apart, 1 feeder, 1 worker.10 each and then change.

Feeder gives a nice high feed to the worker who then does one small volley to themselves(100cm above them), claps their hands and then volleys the ball back to their partner.

Pointers

•    Demonstrate the height of the first volley,

•    The first volley much go straight up and slightly in front of the volleyer,

•    They may have to move their feet,

•    If they find it difficult, try volleying the first volley higher.

Key Phases

Volley, Clap, Volley.

How low can you volley the ball and still make it work.

Move your feet if you have to.
