Tendring Beat Title contenders

Tendring Women 3 - 0 Sheffield

25-17, 25-23, 25-21

Report by Kerry Skinner

After a very successful start to the season Tendring Ladies were to host 2nd in the league Sheffield. Coaches Mark Harris and Nick Davies had prepared the team knowing that this would be the most challenging match yet and would set the tone for the rest of the season.

Tendring started the match well, consistent serving from Rebecca Saunders caused Sheffield trouble from the off, making it clear this would be key to winning the game for the home side.  A confident Tendring side settled down, accurate passing from Vicky Southgate and Emily Mansfield made it easy for Saunders to distribute the ball across the net. Robyn Sawyer and Linda Ziverte were able to cause damage hitting, making it difficult for Sheffield to return the ball in any consistent manor, finishing up 25-17 to Tendring.

After losing the first set Tendring new Sheffield would come back hard pushing for an early lead, however Tendring stomped this out with accurate serving from Robinson pressurising their defence. Sheffield came back placing the ball all over the court, Tendring’s defence were not phased with Haydon and Mansfield not letting the ball touch the floor. With Ziverte and Kerry Skinner providing confidence and strong hitting at the net Tendring were able to win the 2nd set 25-23.

Going in to third set Sheffield started strong gaining a 6 point lead over Tendring, after a timeout and some strong words of encouragement from the Tendring Bench, they were ready to restart the match on their terms. Everyone pulled together and nothing could lead Tendring astray, with Sawyer serving intelligently, Beth White blocking consistently and Ziverte as an undeniable force at the net Tendring were able to stay 4 points ahead to win the set 25-21.

After a whole team performance Tendring Ladies are now top of the league with 5 straight 3-0 wins. Thanks to all of the supporters and spectators who came down to watch. Our next home games are on the 13th of November against Northampton and Hertfordshire.
