Tendring Off To Flying Start

Tendring 3 - 0 Cambridge

25-21, 25-16, 22-18
Report by Neil Masters

Tendring's season got off to a flying start last Saturday. The team had a different look to it's starting line up as key player Nick Davies had suffered a ruptured Achilles in the off-season.

The confidence of the squad had not been shaken and expectations for the season are still high. However an error ridden start was frustrating as they went 7-2 down. Stuart Dove stepped up to the service line and pinned Cambridge's receivers creating opportunities for Tendring to fight back.
Liam Chinnery who had replaced Davies put on a display that proved that Tendring's strength and depth was as good as most teams in the country. His versatile setting and strong defence allowed Tendring's attack to flow throughout the match. With his help and a good link with Alex porter, Tendring got in front for the first time and didn't look back. Tendring won the first set 25-21.

Sonny Chaney and Joe Cook took a firm grip of the second set with excellent blocking and counter attacking. Tendring showed early season cobwebs when a number of mental errors cost them a decent lead. With a 3 point lead at the second technical time out, coach Neil Masters settled the players down and from that point Tendring tightened up their error count and extended their lead. Mitchell Lawrence and Sergey Dupleca were introduced and their impact fortified their lead.

A number of changes of personnel in the 3rd set saw a very inexperienced team take on Cambridge.  Captain Sebastian Widlarz was on excellent form and galvanised the young team. Spencer White-Overton and Masters reception kept a steady base and Dupleca was able to release hitters Dove and Widlarz confirming Cambridge's defeat. Liam Chinnery picked up the Janice Porter award as recognition for his fine efforts in replacing the hole left by Davies.

Tendrings next match is Saturday 12.00 at TTC, Frinton Campus.
