Tendring mens volleyball team, division 3 east champions were drawn against New Forest the division 3 west champions for the first fixture of the season. This was the very team that had knocked Tendring out of the play-offs last season and both have aspirations of being champions this campaign.

Tendring went into this match wanting to set the league alight and also to gain retribution from the loss that was still fresh in the memories.
Tendring's starting line up had a different tone than last season as both Sonney Chaney (16) & Joe Cook (18) had spent large portions of time on the bench as they developed their skills. But given their chance both players showed that hard work & dedication had paid off and showed true quality against a tough opponent.

Despite their efforts though, Tendring were slow to start and with New Forest right on their game took an early lead 7-3. Tendring were not going to be blown away, not this time and as the first set developed the all round power that Tendring pocess prove to be vital. Stuart Dove again fit after a freak accident was back to his dominating best and captain Sebastian Widlarz showed that not only is he a powerful attacker but also a smart one as he created points from nowhere. Tendring turned round the points difference and started to stretch out the lead, eventually winning 25-19.

The second set was very similar, Tendring even losing 9-4 due to some ineffective serving. Having to face the points deficit, Tendring changed their approach, being more strategic with their serve and began to gain points. New forest started to look like a beaten team as they ran out of ideas and their main threat tamed by great blocking and defence. A rare point from the defensive player Liam Chinnery confounded New Forest misery and Tendring claimed a 9 point swing to win the set by 25-20.

Going into the third set Tendring new that a good start would demorolise New Forest and despite the two teams trading early points Tendring still looked dominant. A great service run from ex GB player Alex Porter, took the set and effectively the match away from New Forest. To consolidate the win Nick Davies dazzled the opponents with his deceptive setting and Man of the Match Seb Widlardz back in dominating form, knocking one of the New Forest players off their feet finished the match with a comfortable 25-20 scoreline.

The next fixture will be this sunday 11.00 am at Tendring Technology College's Frinton Campus, the support will be most welcome.
