Tendring 3 - 2 Boathouse

17-25, 18-25, 25-23,  25-19, 15-11

Report by Neil Masters

Tendring's epic comeback versus mid table Boathouse has reinforced there Division 1 status for next season. It was defiantly  not plain sailing for Tendring but at 16-15 in the first set Tendring looked competitive however a run of six points cost Tendring the first set.

The second set began with a tight exchange of points. Another cluster of points from Boathouse  created a considerable lead, forcing coach Neil Masters to introduc Ben Wilson and Sebastian Widlarz who made a positive impact and stabilised the set. Their efforts were unfortunately too late and the emphasis for the match was set.

A change of line up in the 3rd set with a change of tactics exploited  Boathouses weaknesses. Tendring opened up a small lead but the experienced Boathouse side which had an array of former England internationals was not enough to win the set outright as a late charge saw the score level at 23-23. Two crucial errors from Boathouse cost them the set and let Tendring get a foothold on the match.

Set 4 confirmed Tendring's tactical dominance as they opened up an 8 point lead as Nick Davies and Sonny Chaney combined well. A small fightback from Boathouse was not enough. A fantastic piece of defence from Jack Bruce set up Stuart Dove to finish the set which he duly took.

In the shortened fifth and final deciding set Boathouse took a 2- 0 lead, Tendring's tactics ensured that this lead would not last long with MVP Alex Porter and Janice Porter award winner Sonny Chaney firing on all cylinders. An excellent service run from Davies brought up at 8-5 lead. With a super strength team camaraderie Tendring broke Boathouse's spirit and run out 15-11 winners with no causes for concern.

Tendring's  next home game is in the National Shield semi final on Saturday the 25th of February at 12.00 at Tendring technology college.

Third National Final in 3 Years

Tendring 3 – 1 Guildford

Report by Alex Porter
National Sheild Quarter Finals
25-12, 24-26, 25-18, 26-24

Tendring travelled down to Guildford on Saturday morning missing head coach Neil Master but with a starting line up looking more like last season winning team. With Nick Davies back in the setting role and Liam Chinnery pulling on the libero kit again, the team where hoping to over power their opponents from the division below.

With assistant coach Alex Porter taking over the coaching duties for the day, he was able to bench himself and still put out a formidable team. In set 1, both teams started nervously as they tested each other out, but at 7-5 Tendring realised they were by far the better team. As Jack Bruce and Ben Wilson made easy work of the Guildford serve, Davies was having a field day, distributing the ball evening amongst his hitters. By the time the score reached 20-10 Tendring were firing on all cylinders with Seb Widlarz destroying them with hit after hit down the line, giving Tendring a 25-12 set win.

In set 2 Porter put out a mixture of old and young, with James Baker(16) and Mitchell Lawrence(16) getting a run out. Davies utilised the middle more, the speed and height of Lawrence and Joe Cook was too much for the Guildford block. At 19-15 the team was starting to show signs of complacency, so Porter gave Ben Ward-Cochrane(17) his second appearance in adult volleyball. Unfortunately Tendring’s game slowed down and Guildford got the upper hand running out 26-24 set winners.

The starting line up was reintroduced and from here the confidence grew again. Davies kept feeding Wilson and Stuart Dove who were easily fining holes in the block, plus Chaney was dropping the occasionally bomb in the middle. Guildford could see they were up against the wall and took their chances when they could but most of their attacks where soaked up by Jack Bruce or blocked by Joe Cook. As Tendring increased their lead to 4 points, they focused on their service which resulted in numerous free balls. In situations like this Tendring are unstoppable not only in their own division but probably even in the Super 8’s, in other words Guildford didn’t stand a chance as Tendring won the set 25-18.

With the confidence flowing again Ward-Cochrane was reintroduced to the starting line up to give him some much needed experience.  After some poor passing from the Tendring receivers, Tendring found themselves down 6-1. Baker was introduced for Widlarz and produced a side out straight away. As Guildford maintained a 6 point lead you could see the subs were eager to get on. After trading for 12 points, Tendring found themselves 13-7 down, Davies and Widlarz were reintroduced and the team chipped away at the deficit. As the score reached the 20’s Tendring were the team with all the confidence again, Guildford were running out of ideas. Great hitting from Wilson and Chaney plus a couple of serves from Cook gave Tendring match point, which Guildford hit into the net.

Tendring are now through to the semi finals of the National Shield, against fellow NVL Division 1 rivals London Docklands. This will be Tendring’s third National Cup/Shield semi final in as many years.

TENDRING DO THE DOUBLE OVER CAMBRIDGE

CAMBRIDGE 2 -3 TENDRING

19-25, 30-32, 25-21, 26-24, 8-15

Report by Neil MAsters

Tendring secured a well needed win following a tussle with Cambridge volleyball club. Inspirational setter Nick Davies returned from a ruptured Achilles injury to help Tendring's cause. Davies had been expected to miss the entire season, but his dedication to recovery has paid off.

Tendring raced into a 1 set lead but were 5 points adrift as the second set drew to a close. Coach Neil Masters used his last time out and called for the team to fight for every point. Tendring's response was exceptional, chipping away at the deficit time after time.
However the lead still looked to much to overhaul once Cambridge reached set point. Ben Wilson stepped up to serve with all the pressure on him not to miss. Tendring saved 3 set points to draw level at 24-24. Now it was which team could hold their nerve as it became first team to get 2 points clear. With Tendring losing the first point of the shootout they would have to save 4 more set points, in the process never gaining the opportunity of a set point themselves. It wasn't until Alex Porter came to serve & combined with a huge block from Sonny Chaney did the tables turn. Tendring now had a set point & with the pressure all now on Cambridge, Tendring took control & finished the set an amazing 32-30.

In the third set Cambridge suffered an ironic injury as the substitute turned out to be a more penetrative player. Tendring probably still recovering from such a comeback were caught off guard and lost the third 25-21. With the smell of a comeback of their own, Cambridge gained a few points lead which Tendring would never overcome, with Cambridge winning the set 26-24.

The deciding set, shortened to first to 15 to increase the intensity is often as much as a lottery as the penalty shootout in football. Tendring had a terrible start making 2 errors and 2 controversial decisions against them had them 5-1 down. Masters called a desperate timeout to settle the players. There was still time left, but no-one would envisage the events that would follow. The two teams traded a point each to make it 6-2. Stuart Dove recalled to te starting line up for the all important 5th set, served 10 in a row. The Tendring team led by Janice Porter award winner James Baker defended as a club on a mission and were ably backed up by davies & porter.

At 13-6 Cambridge sided out, ending Dove's service run. With such a huge lead Tendring cruised to their 1st win of 2012.

Masters Beaten by Old Team

Tendring 0 - 3 Newcastle Staffs

16-25, 12-25, 15-25

Report by Neil Masters

Tendring's run of losses continued over the past week. But with opposition from the top of their division & a super 8 team in the cup any win would have come as an upset.
